Work: Pictogram “Backpack”
Author: Agnieszka Jankowiak & Jankowiak & Tomasz Falkiewicz
At the end of the 1970s, Marek Nowaczyk – art historian, artist, curator and a founder of the Goldsmithing Artists’ Association – initiated the promotion of artistic jewelry at the Art Gallery in Legnica. He went from one artist goldsmith to another, travelling by train or hitchhiking, with a backpack, to collect works for the 1st All-Polish Survey of Goldsmithing and Jewellery.
Lucyna and Marek Nieniewski mention that one day, a few years later, when they were taking a walk with their children in one of Krakow districts, they came across Marek, who asked them for some works for another Survey, then packed the pieces into a… backpack and went to meet another artist. Unique works of Polish artists goldsmiths travelled to Legnica in an inconspicuous backpack, and that gave us an opportunity to see them.
The work “Backpack” is a symbol of 40 years of exhibitions of goldsmithery in Legnica, initiated with the 1st All-Polish Survey of Goldsmithing and Jewellery, and after many years transformed into the Legnica SILVER Festival. The backpack contains 28 silver granules, which in turn symbolize 28 years of the International Jewellery Competition in Legnica, the main event of the Silver Festival.
Work borrowed from Maria Magdalena Kwiatkiewicz’s Collection of Modern Goldsmithery. Thank you – http://galeriayes.pl/
